Es, whose name is an abbreviation of Embryo Storage, also known by her extended student name Es Mitsurugi (Guardian of the Gate, or in XBlaze known as Azure Maiden or formerly known by her downgrade-self as Nobody), is one of the 3 main protagonists of BlazBlue’s visual novel spin-off series, XBlaze (alongside Touya Kagari, and "Me"). The BlazBlue incarnation of Es eventually debuted in the BlazBlue mainline game Central Fiction as a playable pseudo-guest character.
She returns as a playable character in BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle.
Bio[]
Although XBlaze is set in a different world from the BlazBlue one, they're connected by the Boundary and the Azure. In the BlazBlue mainline universe, Es originally served to backup a person's data, supposedly including herself, so they can be restored along with the universe, instead of like the other ones who serves as a substitute vessel for the Embryo in XBlaze universe. She’s a guardian of the Azure Gate, the gate that leads to the Azure, the source of ultimate power. There, she's looking for the "Man of the Azure" who has the rights of taking the Azure, and will protect the gate against anybody else who tries to get close.

- As there was no English Dub for XBlaze series and BlazBlue Central Fiction, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle marks it the very first time Es was dubbed in English in both story and gameplay.
- This also makes her the first XBlaze character to be dubbed.
- Es’ made-up surname, Mitsurugi while attending Hakuo North Academy, is named after the agency she works for, the Mitsurugi Agency in XBlaze universe.
- The friends/loved ones of Es’ XBlaze counterpart are referenced in her victory screen dialogue with Yu Narukami. They are also indirectly mentioned in one of her generic intro dialogue, where she mentions the word "comrades" as warm.
- Es has color palettes of the following characters: Dizzy (Guilty Gear), Naoto Kurogane (BlazBlue), Mitsuru Kirijo, Linne, Ruby Rose, and Mercy (Overwatch).
- Es has a color palette of Ruby, which was carried over from BlazBlue Central Fiction. Interestingly enough, they both share special victory dialogue in BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, have a favorite food in the form of a sweet (Es with pudding (no matter what universes) and Ruby with strawberries and cookies (befitting her color motifs)), and wield big weapons (Es with Murakumo and Ruby with Crescent Rose).
