Merkava (Basilisk of The Abyss), is a playable character and one of the neutral supporting characters in Under Night In-Birth and its updates.
He returns in BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle as one of the Season 1’s DLC playable characters.
As one of the many eldritch creatures that inhabit the Hollow Night known as Voids. Merkava is driven by the instinct to consume EXS. Unlike other Voids, however, he is sentient and intelligent, having once been a human until he was consumed by the power of Existence. As such, he can communicate with others via telepathy, harboring respect for those who speak with him as though he is equal to them, but having no patience for anyone who won't take him seriously, such as thinking him being just like most of the mindless Voids, but Merkava is in a different level than them. His humanoid form also suggests his overall strength as lesser voids take the shape of lizards and snakes.
Merkava is very unique for a Void who can enter the real world, due to his amount of powers and human intelligence, now currently being investigated and trailed by one of Ritter Schild member Londrekia Light, but the latter ended up cancelling one of his mission, just as both are now in neutral friendly terms, such as carrying the Ritter Schild member's luggage, which is meant to be delivered to Litch Kreis branch as a repayment for sparing the intelligent Void's life. Ever since their encounter, Londrekia began a new mission to find a possibility to reverse the Void transformation state back to human form, which might cure Merkava’s transformation.
Merkava is also a suspect to be a murder of Orie Ballardiae’s parents, as she remembered that her parents were murdered by a Void with human intelligence, just like Merkava.
- Merkava is the first neutral character who is not originating from BlazBlue. Although he can be count as the second non-BlazBlue neutral character, if counting Carmine Prime.
- Merkava has color palettes of the following characters: Faust (Guilty Gear), Hakumen, Koromaru (Persona 3), Waldstein, Grimms (RWBY), and Thing Brothers (1 and 2) (Cat in the Hat), later Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Marvel’s Spider-Verse).
- As of Season 2, Merkava having a Spider-Man color palette relating to his English voice actor use to provide a voice for multiple characters in most of Spider-Man-related cartoon. Ironically, Merkava himself is heavily inspired from one of his English voice actor’s character, Venom, including one of the main hosts Eddie Brock. As Gordeau the Harvester has Gambit color from Marvel’s X-Men, this makes Merkava the second character to have a Marvel-based color palette.
